At True North, we help academic writers find compelling routes through their research. 

Whether working with doctoral students, early career researchers, or academic staff well into their careers, our interventions tackle some of writing’s most common challenges: the difficulty of getting started, crafting a convincing narrative, and making academic writing clear, engaging and compelling.

We treat academics as writers steeped in the research process rather than researchers who need ‘writing support’. Our approach draws broadly on our long experience as professional writers and academic trainers. Our intention is always to balance creativity with discipline, originality with academic rigour.

More than anything else, we like to work with writers in a way that will be genuinely transformative and enduring – to help them find that distinctive quality, that voice, that will stay with them and carry them forward into their writing lives. This quest for voice and a sense of direction is what we hope will become their own ‘true north’: a guide and compass for them, and a distinguishing aspect of every article, paper or book they write.
